It’s very important that before doing this you backup your blogs on blogger.

Settings in Blogger

Click Formatting and change the Timestamp Format to be mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss AM/PM (the first choice in the dropdown menu).
Click Archiving and set Archive Frequency to ‘monthly’
These settings are already set in Blogger by default. You may already have these settings in your blog anyway, so effectively you do not change any Blogger settings.

Settings on Blog.com.mt

Login into your Blog.com.mt account. Go to Import. Click on Blogger - “Import posts and comments from a Blogger account”. Fill in your blogger username and password.

It will list all your blogger blogs as you see on the Blogger dashboard. Click on the blog you want to move to Blog.com.mt and the Import will start automatically. Time taken will depend on how large your blog is. It takes 2-3 minutes for 1000 posts.

Remember, do not stop, reload or restart while the process is going on. It seems at times that the importing process is stuck, but it is continuing in the background.

After all is done, it will tell you it is done and you can ‘Move on”…

If for some reason things get stuck, you can “reset the importer”.
View your new Blog.com.mt blog manage and see all your posts and comments are imported.

If you find this complicated don’t hesitate to contact us.

If you’re new to Blogging in general, here’s a brief introduction to (almost) everything you need to get started at Blog.com.mt.

Q. What is a blog? What is Blog.com.mt?

A blog is a particular type of web site, where articles (or “posts” or “entries”) are listed in reverse-chronological order (the most recent articles at the top).

Blogs are usually published by individuals as a kind of diary, journal, magazine, or independent journalism. There are many millions of active blogs on the internet, written by millions of people about millions of topics.

Blog.com.mt lets you easily create your own blog, and write about the things that interest you. The difference from other Blog portals being that this one is specifically for Maltese Citizens.

Q. How much does Blog.com.mt cost? Is there a free trial?

Blog.com.mt blogs are free, gratis, b’xejn! There are some paid upgrades available but they are entirely optional (and very reasonably priced!).

If you choose not to upgrade your blog, we won’t charge you or your readers a cent. We won’t ask for your credit card details. There is no free trial period because our blogs are just plain free.

Start BloggingQ. How do I sign up for a blog?

Visit http://www.blog.com.mt, and click on Option 01 or else Click Here.

Q. I just signed up. How do I log in?

When you complete the signup process you’ll receive an email with your username and password. Visit Blog.com.mt and type your username and password in the box that says “Already a Member?”. Click the “Login” button.

If you’re using your own computer, you can check the box that says “Remember Me” before you log in - this will save you the trouble of logging back in each time you visit Blog.com.mt. Don’t do this if you’re using someone else’s computer, or a shared computer in a library or internet cafe, otherwise the next person who uses that computer can take over your blog.

You should save a copy of the signup email that contains your username and password. Consider printing it out and storing it in a safe place.

Difference between Tags & Categories

Categories allowed the broad grouping of post topics but when you wanted to describe a post in more specific terms you had to use more categories. That lead to very long category lists inside the blog, very long lists in sidebars. It was also confusing in that what we said were categories others said were tags.

Tags are similar, but instead of a list of words to choose from, you write them in a list (separated by commas) in a text box below your post. They are free form words and generally describe your post in more detail.

For example, a post titled “Last Night At Burger King” might be filed under the “Dinner” category, but could have tags like, “burger, chicken fries, chocolate shake, dr. pepper”.

Here are some common questions and answers:

Is Tag the same as tag ?

Yes. Capitals letters do not change a tag.
Can I see a list of all the tags I have used?
No, there is no way to view the tags you have used.

Is there a limit to the number of tags I can have?
No.

Urls.
A post into a category ‘food’, the url looks like this:
http://faq.blog.com.mt/category/food/

The same post using the tag ‘food’ will look like this:
http://faq.blog.com.mt/tag/food/

A post into the category ‘food’ and with the tag ‘rice’ will look like this:
http://faq.blog.com.mt/category/food/
http://faq.blog.com.mt/tag/rice/

Is there any advantage to using tags or categories or both?
Not here at Blog.com.mt and not for any search engines, no.

Do I have to use tags?
It is entirely optional.

Will categories be removed?
No we won’t remove the Categories Feature.

Have any links to any posts anywhere on my blog been changed by this?

They are all okay. We are intelligently redirecting your old URLs.
How do I rename a tag?
- You would need to find each post you had made with the tag and make the changes.

Are categories and tags hierarchical?

Categories can be treated that way by making categories children of another. This has always been the case.
Tags exist in their own right and have no set relationship to anything else.

I had a lot of categories. Can I delete those and just use tags from now? What will happen to my existing posts?
You can delete them but all your posts will go into the default category. You will have to edit every post and add back the tags.

Can I move my blog to another blog site somewhere else?

Of course! Your data is your data, and don’t trust any service that treats you otherwise. You can now import and export your entire blog and comments as an XML file that Blog.com.mt will generate for you. You’ll find the export and import options from the Manage tab in your Dashboard. The XML format is an extended version of RSS 2.0.

Please do NOT use this to get lots of backups for yourself. It uses a lot of resources to create the above file but also because everything on your blog is backed up hourly and also daily. So having this as a backup is really of little use.

Please only use it if you want to export your blog to move away from Blog.com.mt. Not that you’d want to do that - unless it’s to your own hosting powered by Blog.com.mt, NIU or PirroneDesign! ;-)

Are the blogs being backed up?

Absolutely. If a very large meteor were to
hit our server and destroy them beyond repair,
all of your data would still be safe and we could have your blog online
within a couple of days. (After the meteor situation dies down.)

You can also download a backup/export of your blog, posts, comments,
etc by going to your dashboard and clicking Manage then Export.

Why not use Word

Using any word-processor with our editor is not a good thing to do.
Microsoft Word is not a standard, everyone should not use it and our editor should not be expected to cope with what it produces. A Word document cannot be pasted into any other proprietary word-processor and look just the same - our editor is no different.

Here is why any word-processor - including Open Office - should not be used.

This text was written in Open Office then copied and pasted into our editor. Right now it looks okay.

If you click the HTML tab though you will see what the real code looks like:

That is what just 2 short lines produced. If you have written a long entry then it becomes a mess of tags - and if just one tag does not get closed properly - your page looks bad. It’s a LOT of tags there and you would need to dig through each one to find the unclosed tag.

This is almost identical text written directly into our editor. It looks similar.

Clicking the HTML tab shows only a few tags:

Because there are less tags it is easier to see if one has gone wrong.

We recommend that you:

  • write directly to our editor
  • use either a plain text editor then post to our editor and format the text
  • use a desktop client

Just don’t use Word - or expect to see and have to fix mistakes.
